“Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent.” Genesis 9:20-21 NIV

Who do you have in your life that is covering you? For those times when you are most vulnerable who’s going to look out for you?

The other morning I got up at 4:45am to go workout at 5:30am. I rushed around in the dark getting dressed so I wouldn’t disturb my wife. I brushed my teeth and washed up. I went to the gym. I spoke to a few people on the way in. Then I saw one of the young men from my church who serves as an armor bearer and he said, “pastor you have toothpaste on the corner of your mouth!” I was mortified! How many people saw me with a big white splotch of toothpaste? I looked like a rabid dog! LOL

Do we have anybody who can tell us something that ain’t right? Or at bare minimum cover us until we can get it together?

NOAH was a righteous man that God chose to save a remnant when he destroyed the world with a flood. Noah was on a ship with his wife and three sons with their wives along with various species of animals for at least six months!

When they finally got off the ship Noah planted a vineyard. When the grapes were ready he made wine. When the wine was ready he drink until he got drunk. When he got drunk he lay naked in his tent.

Before we judge Noah let’s remember something. He was closed up on a ship with his family and a ship full of stinky animals for six months. We have a snow day today and we are closed up with our children for at least a day and we are hoping the snow melts soon! Try six months being shut up with your children and animals!!

His youngest son comes in and finds him drunk and naked. He finds it amusing and tells his older two brothers who walk in backwards so they will not see their father’s nakedness and they cover him with a blanket.

When Noah wakes up to learn what Ham his son has done, he speaks a curse over him for exposing his nakedness he subsequently blesses his two older sons for covering him.

  1. Immature people will always expose you instead of covering you. You need people who are mature enough to know that you’re not perfect and you need some grace to get it together.
  1. Mature people don’t delight in your misfortune. His two older sons walked in backwards because they didn’t want to see their fathers naked. The younger son put it on snap chat. The older sons deleted the account. People who shouldn’t be covering for you are people who leave you blindsided.
  2. They covered him until he was conscious. Noah wasn’t drunk in the streets, which would be irresponsible on his part. He was drunk in his own tent. The youngest son abused the privilege of having access to the father who didn’t let everybody in his tent. You need the people you let in to cover you when you’re not conscious of something potentially embarrassing.

Now covering is not justifying dysfunction. Just as my “son in ministry ” told me I had toothpaste on my mouth somebody needs to be able to tell you that being drunk and naked isn’t a good look for somebody God just used to save the world.

We need people who can cover us and not expose us to an open shame. God will expose those who don’t take heed to warning. Our job is to cover them in hopes that they make correction before destruction.

Dear God,

You are the one who ultimately covers our sin with grace. Help us to be faithful sons and daughters who cover our parents. Also help us to be cognizant of the logs in our own eyes before we try to get specks out of others eyes. We all have sinned and fallen short of your Glory. Thank you for covering us until we could get ourselves together.

 In Jesus Name,

Amen
