“We also gave you this rule: If you don’t work, you don’t eat. Now we learn that some of you just loaf around and won’t do any work, except the work of a busybody. So, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, we ask and beg these people to settle down and start working for a living.” ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭3:10-12‬ ‭CEV‬‬

We need to make sure that we are living productive lives. Mere activity does not equate to productivity. Some people are busy but they’re busy in everybody else’s business. They spend an inordinate amount of time trolling everyone else’s timeline or life. They have no life of their own because they are busybodies.

The apostle Paul warns us about being busybodies and tells us three things.

  1. If you don’t work, you don’t eat. There is this basic understanding that each of us needs to work to provide for our own needs. There are homeless people clinging to their dignity with signs that say, “I will work for food.” Because there’s this basic understanding that all able-bodied people in their right mind should work. Coupled with that there should be living wages to ensure that those who work are adequately compensated, but the notion is you have to work to eat. Every person that lives under my roof has to contribute and not lay around being lazy. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
  2. Avoid people that just loaf around and spend their time meddling in other people’s business. These people keep up a bunch of mess through gossiping and stirring up trouble. They have a lot of activity but no fruit. Henry Thomas Buckle — ‘Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.’
  3. Settle down and start working for a living. When you are busy creating something that gives back to the world and blesses people you don’t have time to meddle in other people’s lives. Each of us should seek to live quiet lives and stay out of other people’s business. When I’m busy doing my father’s business I don’t have time to be meddling in everybody else’s business!

Dear God,

Help me to be a blessing to somebody and not messing with somebody by being a busybody. When I encounter a busybody give me the discernment to know who I’m dealing with and put my energy into something productive so that I’m not sidetracked by messiness. Help me to be productive so that I can provide for my family and not distracted by people who are all over the place destroying families!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen!
