ID-10025727John 12:5-6 ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.’ He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the moneybag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

God expects for us to look out for this less fortunate. God expects for us to speak up for those who have no voice. Some people think that it is a waste of time to pour out our resources for those who do not have.

Jesus said, “Whenever you help the less fortunate you are helping me.” Sometimes it’s hard for us to extend help or give our money for causes to the poor because we feel like we are struggling ourselves. Jay Z said, “I can’t help the poor if I’m one of them.” We don’t become rich by withholding our good and we don’t become poor by giving. It’s not a waste to help.

Jesus came to visit Mary and her brother. While he was reclining for dinner, Mary poured a whole bottle of expensive perfume on Jesus feet and wiped them with her hair. The entire room smelled of perfume. Side note: if the room smelled like what you poured out for Jesus what would it smell like?

When she had finished one of the disciples named Judas asked, “Why this waste? This could have been given to the poor. But he didn’t say this because he cared for the poor but because he was stealing.

  1. The people who steal the most complain the most. Will a man rob God? We do when we take what should be given to God and keep it for ourselves. Judas stole from Jesus then complained about Mary’s gift. People who don’t understand other people’s generosity are probably stealing from Jesus.
  1. Jesus said the poor you will have always. He was saying to us there will always be an opportunity to help the poor if that is what you are concerned with. We can help with philanthropic efforts but we should also help the cause of Christ. The church is the bride of Christ who looks after the less fortunate. We give to the church who helps the less fortunate and we extend our hands to the poor.
  1. You can’t waste anything on Jesus. When you really give from your heart, God is the one that sees it and makes sure it gets to where it needs to be.

Dear God,

Thank you for letting me pour out my best on you. I know that I have not wasted anything but you have given me more than I have given you. Give me discernment to know who to help and when to help. Thank you for the blessings that you have poured out to me as a result of the tenth I brought to your house. You are a faithful God and you are worthy of my sacrifice.

In Jesus name,
