“He asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?” They replied, “We’ve not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Acts 19:2 (CEB)
Don’t you hate it when you order something and get down the road and realize they didn’t put it in the bag? You paid for it but didn’t get it! As hard as it is to get money you want to make sure you get everything you paid for.
Jesus paid a price that we can never pay back. He gave his life for our sins. He took our place on the cross to redeem us from hell. We will never know how much it cost to see our sins upon that cross.
From that heavenly transaction we received salvation, eternal life, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Problem is, many of us failed to receive the Holy Spirit when we first believed.
Don’t we all receive the Holy Spirit when we believe? We should! The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity; Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. The Holy Spirit is the one that empowers us. The Holy Spirit regenerates our hearts. But many of us are missing out on one of the greatest gifts that Jesus paid for.
The Apostle Paul discovered a group of believers who had not received the Holy Spirit because they had been baptized by John’s baptism but not baptized in Jesus’ name. The problem was that they went through the religious act but never made a relational connection with Jesus.
It’s not enough to make a cognitive consent to acknowledging who Jesus is but you must open your heart for the Holy Spirit to indwell your being by surrendering your life to Jesus.
- If you believe in the Lord Jesus and are baptized in his name you received the Holy Spirit. Every person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God and that God raised him from the dead has access to the Holy Spirit after baptism. But some people are not aware that the Holy Spirit was part of God’s bundle. You have equipment that hasn’t even been powered up! The Holy Spirit is waiting for you to activate the power that God has put inside of you.
- Paul laid hands on them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. There is a transference of power that happens when believers are prayed over with holy hands. There is an activation of power where two or three are touching and agreeing. We can’t activate this power without connecting to other believers or one that has been sent by God. On one occasion Paul had to remind his protege Timothy how to activate the Holy Spirit that was dormant in him. 2 Timothy 1:6-7 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
- Once the spirit is activated you will see fruits of the spirit. Once Paul laid hands on the people they began to speak in other languages and prophesy. This is one way to recognize that someone is filled with the Holy Spirit but not the only way. Speaking in tongues is not the only litmus test for being filled with the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is given to bless the believer and the one who comes into contact with the believer. When we are filled by the Holy Spirit there are some fruits of the spirit that should be evident in every believer. Galatians 5:22-23, 25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Before you get your day started check your bag. Make sure you got everything that Jesus paid for. You should have inside of you the Holy Spirit which enables you to have joy, peace, power, love, gentleness, patience, self discipline. If you find any of these fruits missing get in your prayer closet and ask God to fill you up until you overflow with his Holy Spirit. David said, “The Lord is my shepherd. He anoints my head with oil until my cup overflows!” Check your cup!
I pray that you will make my friends conscious of the fact that they have access to so much power. You have planted dynamite inside our souls. We have the power to heal, to prophesy, to deliver, to bind up devils, to speak your word. Father, stir up the gift of the Holy Spirit in every person who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior. There are people walking around defeated because they don’t know what they have in their spiritual bag. Turn on their power source today so that they know that it’s not by their power or by their might but by your Holy Spirit that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus. Fill us up until we overflow!
In Jesus’ Name,
