Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but your words can do major damage. People can say some of the meanest things to each other. We live in a time where it’s envouge to be mean. I was watching “mean tweets” with the NBA players where people said whatever they wanted to the sheer delight of audience members and the awkward amusement of their intended targets. One young lady recently jumped off a bridge after her dad publicly shamed her on Facebook by cutting her hair. Her classmates followed up that shame by harassing her at school.

Our words can kill. That’s why it’s important to watch what you say because once it’s spoken you can’t take it back, especially on the Internet.

That’s why Paul tells the Ephesians to:

1.  speak truth in love so that we may grow up to the full measure. If we want to help people there is a way to talk to them that builds them up and not tear them down. When you do it with love it is always done in a way that leaves people with hope and helps them grow.

2.  Don’t let anything unwholesome come out of your mouth. Degrading and cussing people out is not love. That’s why Paul says, “Get rid of all bitterness, anger, and resentment.” When you speak out of anger it’s like using a flame thrower to pressure was a house.

3.  Only speak what is beneficial to the person. You must be truthful but you also must be loving. Put falsehood to the side. You are not doing anyone a favor by masking the truth. People can only grow from hearing the truth. Some people scream and curse so that won’t have to speak truth or hear truth.

Today before you speak T.H.I.N.K.

Is it…

True only speak what is factual and will help people be free.

Helpful will what you say help them be better?

Inspirational will this inspire them to do better or be better?

Needed is this really necessary for their benefit?

Kind is there a way you can say it so that they know you love them?

If not …be quiet.

Dear God,

Help me today to speak truth in love. Don’t let me torch people with my tongue. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you my God.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
