1 John 1:5-6 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.

When we were little kids if we wanted to be mean we would cut the lights off to scare the little ones or cause our little brothers/sisters to stumble. It seemed funny to us but if you were the recipient of that unexpected darkness it wasn’t as funny. Whenever we were engulfed by darkness and a wave of fear swept over us we would yell to our brother, “cut the light on!”

There are a lot of people walking around in darkness afraid. Victor Hugo expressed a profound judgment of today’s despair a century ago. He said, ‘If a soul is left in the darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but he who causes the darkness.’

We are supposed to be the light of the world but we have dimmed our lights and dumbed down. When we underfund schools and overfunded prisons we have created darkness. When we gentrify the inner city and redistribute the poor into sub urbanized areas we have created darkness. When we hide behind unjust laws that oppress the poor and minorities we have created darkness. It’s time for believers to cut the light on!

Six hundred million people in Africa don’t have light at night. They don’t have electricity. “Electricity is more than light. This is a true change in our daily life”, A mother, Yelimané, village, Mali
To meet these challenges, Akon Lighting Africa seeks to provide a concrete response at grass roots level to Africa’s energy crisis and lay the foundations for future development. Launched in February 2014 by international music star, Akon, leader Thione Niang and entrepreneur Samba Bathily, this initiative aims to develop an innovative solar-powered solution that will provide African villages with access to a clean and affordable source of electricity.

1.  God is light and in him there is no darkness. One of the ways to discourage crime is to make sure the area you are trying to protect is well lit. When God is our source of light the devil cannot linger with his evil intentions.

2.  We must have fellowship with God to reflect his light. When we live out God’s teachings as expressed through Jesus Christ we reflect his light. Injustice can’t exist where we reflect his light. Poverty cannot continue when we feed the hungry. Unjust laws cannot continue when we set free the captives. Illiteracy can’t continue when we give sight to the blind.

3. If we walk in spiritual darkness and say we have fellowship with God we are liars. You can’t cut the light off on people who are vulnerable and call yourself a follower of God. To participate or cosign on something unethical is like cutting the light off on your weaker brother or sister. Cut the light on!

Everywhere you go today, let your light shine. Instead of cursing the darkness light a candle.

Dear God,

Thank you for sending The Light of the World, Jesus, into my dark world. I saw the light and I changed my ways. Your word is a light unto my feet and a lamp unto my path. Today I choose to reflect your light so that others might come out of the darkness.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
