Nehemiah 7:1 After the wall was rebuilt and I had installed the doors, and the security guards, the singers, and the Levites were appointed, I put my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the captain of the citadel, in charge of Jerusalem because he was an honest man and feared God more than most men.

Acts 1:24 Then they prayed, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen.’

There are a lot of people not really excited about either candidate for President. We are a polarized nation. Even the “Grand Ole Party” is split over their own candidate Donald Trump. Young Millennials are still not so sure they want to endorse Hillary. But what each of us should be concerned about is who is going to guard this gate?

The gate to the city was the main entrance that had to be guarded by someone with extremely good character and integrity. Jerusalem was in the rebuilding stages and Nehemiah had just finished putting the doors and walls back up to make the city safe. The last piece to ensure that the city was safe was to pick a leader to be gatekeeper.

Nehemiah chose Hananiah because of the following two character traits.

He was an honest man. Many people on the left love Donald Trump because he says what they wanted to say but didn’t have the courage to say. Now this doesn’t make him honest it makes him unfiltered. Honest has a whole other meaning.
hon·est (ŏn′ĭst) adj.
1. Marked by or displaying integrity; upright: an honest lawyer.
2. Not deceptive or fraudulent; genuine: honest weight.
3. Equitable; fair: honest wages for an honest day’s work.
4. a. Characterized by truth; not false: honest reporting.
b. Sincere; frank: an honest critique.
5. a. Of good repute; respectable.
b). Without affectation; plain: honest folk.
6. Virtuous; chaste.

As we look at this definition we might think, “well Hillary has those 35,000 emails.” That’s true but was she honest about being irresponsible? Or did she blame other people for being irresponsible?

  1. Hananiah feared God more than most people. What role does God play in the lives of the people we are considering to be President? It’s really confusing to me that many conservative Christians are endorsing Trump when he doesn’t care for Jesus. Jesus said, “whatever you do to the least of these, the poor, the foreigner, women and children, the imprisoned, the sick; you also do to me.” It would seem to me that one of these candidates fears God more than the other.
  2. When stuck between two pray for God to show you their heart. I have to jump to the book of Acts when the apostles were trying to pick a new leader after Judas betrayed Jesus. They narrowed to two men that had walked closely with Jesus. Then they prayed to God because he knew their heart and the lot fell to Matthias.

When we go to the polls next month to vote for our gatekeeper please take it serious. Ask yourself is this person Honest? Do they fear God more than the other candidate? Will they look out for the concerns for the least of these? Did the Holy Spirit lead me in my decision?

If you put the wrong person at the gate all hell could break loose. Right now you are the gatekeeper. Vote for the right person. You shall know a tree by the fruit it bears and out of the heart the mouth speaks.

Dear God,

Our country is vulnerable to attack within and without. No wall will be tall enough if the gatekeeper is not righteous enough. More than that we need your approval for whom we choose because unless the Lord watches over the city the watchmen watch in vain. Father, don’t let us knowingly choose Judas but instead help us to select someone who has followed Jesus for a long time. Wake us up before we mess up. Make America Holy again…well for the first time. Make us one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

In Jesus Name,
