Matthew 7:24-25 ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Every time I see rain on Sunday morning, I know that I will see a smaller crowd at church but also a more powerful experience. It’s the strangest thing. The rain actually separates those who are hungry for the word of God and those who don’t have an appetite. There seems to be an intensity in worship that is missing on sunny days but when people come out in the rain, they are looking for Jesus!

I call these kind of Christians “foundation believers.”  They have such a strong foundation with their faith in Jesus that weather does not become a determining factor in their faithfulness. New Edition asked a good question, “Everybody likes sunny days; but tell me, can you stand the rain?!”

How do you stand the rain!

1.  Hearing the word of God. Paul asks the question, “how can they hear without a preacher. Many people would argue they can read the bible for themselves and they don’t need a preacher. You need both. You need to be corporately challenged and individually informed of God’s word.

2.  You’ve got to put God’s word into practice. It’s not enough to hear it. There are many people who hear God’s word but leave out without doing what he said to do. When we put God’s word into action it’s like building our homes on a solid foundation.

3.  Build a storm proof house. You have to make sure you use the right materials. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

When you build your house on the words of Jesus, putting them into practice and build with the right materials, there is no storm that can stop you.

Dear God,

Storm proof my life by giving me the discipline to put your words into action. Don’t let us just be hearers of your word but doers of your word. I’ve come through the fire and I’ve been through the flood. I’ve been kept by your love.

In Jesus Name!

Amen
