“It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.”

Joshua 3:15-16 NLT

There always seems like there is something blocking our way to the place of our promise. Cash flow problems, insurmountable debt, political obstacles, people problems, you name it; trouble gets in our way sometimes.

But when you’ve been walking with God long enough you know he has the supernatural ability to back that thing up!

This past weekend it rained in Memphis for two days, which made the bodies of water overflow into the roads. God reminded me that we need April showers for May flowers. When Joshua and the Israelites were crossing the Jordan River, it was harvest season and it rained a lot! The river was at flood stage.

You might be wondering why it’s been raining so much in your life with the excess rain blocking your crossing. It’s because God wants to show you who he is. He wants to prove your leadership to the people who doubted you. He’s about to back that thing up!

  1. Tell the priest carrying the ark of the covenant to step into the flooded waters. This is a powerful image. The anointed servants of God carrying the presence of God stepped out on faith into a hopeless situation. It appeared suicidal! Do we have the faith to obey God when it looks too dangerous to step into certain situations? God told them to step into a flooded situation.
  2. When they stepped into the flooded waters, the water backed up to a town called Adam and the other side of the water rolled into the Dead Sea. Two things. The town called “Adam” represented a rollback to man’s original debt. It’s through Adam that sin entered into the world, and God backed that thing all the way up foreshadowing that he was going to once and for all pay off our sin debt through Jesus! Secondly, the excess water flowed into the Dead Sea. God sent fresh resources into what appeared to be dead simply because they stepped out on faith!
  3. They crossed a flooded river on dry ground. In this harvest season God is getting ready to back up what was blocking you so that you can cross over on dry ground. They grabbed twelve stones from the riverbed to remind themselves of the miracle of God letting them cross a flooded river on dry ground. The stones were a monument. So whenever the next generation saw the stones and asked about them, the older people would remind the younger one of the miracle God performed when he backed that thing up!

When they crossed over and ate food from the harvest in the Promised Land the manna ceased! In other words, God cut off their welfare when they fared well by making living wages in the place of promise.

When you step out on faith into what seems hopeless God will back that thing up so that what was blocking you will bless you!

Dear God,

Today, show us how to cross over without being blocked!  Back up everything and everybody who’s trying to prevent us from walking into our Promised Land. Roll back our debt, send in new streams of revenue, and give us a harvest that will provide for those who’ve been dependent upon handouts. Thank you for letting us cross over to life and life more abundantly.

In Jesus’ Name,
