14118840_sLuke 6:47-48 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house that digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.

There’s a population of people who are consumed with the thought of being well built. They work out feverishly to get the right shape. They go on diets trying to lose weight so they can look good in their clothes. They eat clean because they know that working out is only part of the process. But as well built as some of these people are they are in danger of collapsing in the time of storm if their foundation is not strong.

Jesus was teaching his Disciples on the importance of his word. He asked them, “How can you say you love me and you don’t do what I say?”

He gave the analogy of someone who obeys his word to someone building their house on a rock. When the storm came the house survived because it was well built.

  1. They must come to Jesus. Jesus says to all of those who’ve been trying to build themselves up physically but are tired this…come unto me all of you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest!” You tried it your way now try it Jesus’ way.
  2. Listen to Jesus’ teachings. Just like people who are well built physically work out regularly each week; we who seek to be spiritually well built must listen to the teachings of Jesus every week in Bible Study and Worship.
  3. They must follow my teachings. God’s word doesn’t work until you apply it in every day life. You can buy a workout book and leave it on your shelf. No matter how long you stare at it you will not look like the person on the cover until you apply it.
  4. You have to dig down deep. When someone lays a foundation to build a house they have to dig deep until they hit rock. If we are going to be well built spiritually we have to dig deep and allow God’s Spirit to search out every hidden and hurtful thing in our lives. Then let God heal it and fill it with his Holy Spirit.
  5. Build on God’s word and the storms of life will not bring you down.

Dear God,

Thank you for building me up from the inside out. Over the years you have helped me to dig deeper into my own issues and you have constructed a victorious life that has been stabilized by obeying your word. Thank you for your grace for the times that I settled and shifted from your ways. Your firm foundation has kept me even when I fell short. Thank you for your word and your grace.

In Jesus Name,
