“Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”

Luke 9:23 NLT

We live in a world of self-absorbed people. We live under the illusion of being connected because of technology and social media. Even advertisers have learned how to lock in on our self-interest. At some point if we are going to find the meaning of life we must make an exodus out of self.

Jesus explained to his disciples that if they were going to be effective as his followers they had to do three things.

  1. You must turn from your selfish ways. When a person is selfish all they think about is themselves to the exclusion of others. They don’t have the ability to have empathy or compassion. It’s a self-centered, narcissistic point of view. There’s nothing wrong with having an identity. We just need to make sure our interests are in alignment with God’s will for our life.
  2. Take up your cross daily. There is an intentionality to being a follower of Jesus. We have to make a daily decision to live outside of self to include the well-being of self and others. This requires leaving our comfort zone and making room for others.
  3. Follow Jesus. There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end leads to death. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life..” Jesus wants us to walk in the Way that he leads us. There is a desired path for your life. Every day we should look for the desired path that God has set for us. It may change from day to day. That is why we must depend on the Holy Spirit to be our navigator.

Today look for opportunities to get out of self and into the will of God.

Dear God,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to follow you. You have taken me places I never would have imagined. Today I want to be sensitive to where you are leading me. I have come to the end of myself and I am waiting for the voice of the Holy Spirit to recalculate my route. I want to be where you are.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
