“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”

Romans 4:7-8 NLT

Just City, a Memphis-based criminal justice reform advocacy group, has spent more than $50,000 helping people expunge their criminal records, exhausting the organization’s “clean slate fund.”

“Almost without fail, people want their criminal record erased so they can get work or get a better job,” Just City said in a recent letter. “Lately, we’ve been asking some of our clients what a clean record has meant to them. A better job is a very common answer, but so are secure housing, educational opportunities and simple peace of mind. So far, we’ve helped more than 130 people get expungements with our Clean Slate Fund.”

Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone of us could get a clean slate for all the stuff we’ve done wrong and just start our lives over? The good news is that there is a way for us to get a clean slate!

The way we get a clean slate is by accepting the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Jesus paid for the debt that we owed because of sin. Our choices in life that were contrary to the will of God put us in a deficit. We deserved to die but Jesus expunged our records so that our slate was cleaned.

  1. We don’t look like what we’ve been through. If people were to see us as we really looked from the choices we made, we’d be tore up from the floor up. But instead when people see us they see the transformation of our hearts as a result of Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross.
  2. Our sins are put out of sight. There is no record of our wrongdoing. When people have criminal records they can’t get jobs or housing. Can you imagine how difficult life would be if everybody saw our mistakes before they saw us? Jesus died for our sins so that other people wouldn’t see them before they saw us. We are good people who made bad choices and have been forgiven by a Good God!
  3. Jesus has cleared us of our sins. All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. It feels good walking in a room when you have a clean slate. You have more confidence when you have a clean slate. If you confess your sins and believe in the Lord Jesus your sins will be cleared and you will be freed to live the life God has purposed for you to live.

Dear God,

Thank you for giving me a clean slate! I don’t look like what I’ve been through. Father, for every person that’s ever messed up please forgive them as they come to an awareness that there’s got to be a better way. Thank you for the blood of Jesus that washed all my guilt away. Thank you for expunging my record!

In Jesus’ Name,
