John 8:34-36 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

In the movie 12 years a Slave depicts the real life story of a man born free but kidnapped and made a slave against his will. He is stripped from… his wife and children. He is subjected to brutal beatings, degrading work, and left hanging a inch away from death. The story ends with him being rescued and returned to his family.

As horrific as this sounds it is still happening today. Men are being kidnapped from their families. Women are being stripped of their dignity. Young people are being pulled away from their families to be made slaves. The only difference is that they are volunteering for this slavery. They are becoming slaves to sin. Sin is whatever vice that pulls you away from God into captivity unable to use your higher reasoning. Sin takes you where you don’t want to go. Sin keeps you longer than you wanted to stay and makes you pay more than you wanted to pay.
12 years is long enough. We have been slaves to our desires long enough. We tried it our way and look where that got us. God wants us to be free but we have to want what God wants.

How do I get free?
1. Stop thinking like a slave. You have to realize that the life you are living does not compare to the life that God has purposed for you. In this same chapter Jesus saved a woman caught in adultery. They wanted to stone her but Jesus told them, “you without sin cast the first stone.” They all left. Then he told her, ” I don’t condemn you. Go and leave your life of sin!”

2. Leave your Life of Sin. Once Jesus sets you free, he sets you free from something and to something. What had you should no longer control you. When we surrender to the Lordship of Jesus he gives us his Spirit which gives us the ability to make better choices that lead to a better life.

3. Don’t go back to what got you captured. He or she whom the son sets free is free indeed. The devil doesn’t have any new tricks. Recognize his patterns. Know yourself. Sin begins with our own desires. When we give into those desires they conceive and give birth to death. You were born again to live eternally don’t become a slave again. 12 years is long enough.

Dear God,

Thank you for setting me free. I won’t go back to the way things used to be. I have greater things to accomplish. There are no more chains holding me. My eyes are open and I am Free!

In Jesus Name,
